Hallo!! we are back on track :)

So, we have just begun chapter 3! If you have any questions regarding chapter 2, please do not hesitate to contact me via email or my cell number (text).

Our latest irregular verb:
haben - to have

ich habe                       wir haben
du hast                         ihr habt
er,sie, es hat                 sie, Sie haben

PLEASE MEMORIZE THIS VERB ALONG WITH OUR OTHER IRREGULAR SO FAR: SEIN

 Students have been given the vocabulary cards for chapter 3 and are expected to complete them by the end of this week.
Students are expected to be able to answer the question: "Was machst du in deiner Freizeit" oder "Was machst du gern" in a complete sentence using vocabulary acquired throughout the chapter.

"gern" can follow the verb to indicate "like" of that particular activity:

Ich lese gern.                                I like to read.
Ich spiele gern Basketball.           I like to play basketball.

To indicate a particular day on which the activity is done:

am Samstag - on Saturday
am Montag - on Monday

Ich spiele am Montag Basketball.
Am Montag spiele ich Basketball.

Note the word order change!!! When beginning the sentence with an indicator of time, the subject verb word order must be inverted.

Danke!!

Wednesday, August 24, 2016

hallo ihr lieben Schüler!
heute ist Mittwoch der 24. August, 2016
gestern war Dienstag
morgen ist Donnerstag

Words of the day were:

wieviel =  how much, how many
Wieviel ist 13 + 2?
13+ 2 = 15 😉

warum = why
Warum ist die Banane krumm? why is the banana crooked 😊

We went over the date etc., as usual, then we did a homework check that I like to do when I have assigned completion of vocab cards.
Using the phrase "wie sagt man" (how do you say) I go over the new vocabulary and give credit for participation.
We then read a dialogue on page 9 of the textbook and introduced the question:

Woher kommst du? where are you from

answer using: Ich komme aus ___________.

At the end of class, I handed out worksheets (Arbeitsblatt) and asked that everyone look them over and clarify any questions.

You can find them at the book resource center, so no need to go to the actual book and enter code. From the blog, go to deutsch aktuell and click on chapter 1. Then in the column next to the chapters, klick on workbook and under kapitel 1, print out pages 4 and 6. You can even complete the worksheets online and then print them out completed. Let me know if it works for you. If not, I have copies for you to complete tomorrow.
Alles klar? Danke 😊

Hallo liebe Schüler!
Gestern war Montag
Morgen ist Mittwoch
Heute ist Dienstag der 23. August, 2016
das Wort des Tages:
die Vokabelkarten - the vocab cards
schneiden - to cut
die Schere - the scissors

We started with the days and date, went over homework and then proceeded to prepare vocab cards for Kapitel 1. Students were asked to cut the vocab cards, then find definitions in book. Students listened to German music throughout the process and learned one line from a popular soccer chant:
Oh wie ist das schön!

Hausaufgabe für Mittwoch: Vokabelkarten fertig machen (finish vocab cards). They should all be in a little plastic, with the exception of period 1 (I had forgotten the bags) and ready to use, ja? Danke!! Remember: one pile with the ones you recognize, the other with the ones you still need to work on!
:)

Monday, August 22, 2016

hallo!!
heute ist Montag der 22. August 2016 :)
Gestern war Sonntag und morgen ist Dienstag!
das Wort des Tages: "sein" - the verb "to be"
Sein oder nicht sein, das ist die Frage!

Students were introduced to their "first verb" today, the very irregular verb "sein".
Let's conjugate the verb, meaning, we take the verb and display the various forms of the present tense changed according to the subject.
ich bin
du bist
er,sie, es ist
wir sind
ihr seid
sie, Sie* sind
 *remember that this "Sie" is a formal singular you that is used to address adults by kids or adults who don't know one another or have a professional relationship only!

You can read over the verb on page 14 of our textbook under the heading "Sprache" = language/grammar.

Students also learned the very basic steps to the waltz :) as this melody constitutes the backbone of our verb conjugation song for "sein".

Hausaufgabe: im Buch, to be accessed through this blog, book code is: riz12vuk.
Read pages 10/11, ex. 8 on page 11.

Danke!! :)

Remember that the Umlaut (two dots over the "a", "o" and "u") changes the individual pronunciation of the word resulting in overall change in how the word sounds and sometimes even alters the word's meaning...so yes, it is important!

Remember that you can access the resource center to our book via the blog and enter the following code to access the text book: riz12vuk. It is the purple circle with the book in it...click and enter code, voilà! :)

ein Lied (a song)
Alle meine Entchen
schwimmen auf dem See (2x)
Köpfchen unter'm Wasser
Schwänzchen in die Höh!

please let me know if you have any questions :) Danke!!!

Hausaufgabe für Montag: comparison of German vs. American school system, what do you think?
Basic differences, any similarities, what are your thoughts? Which system do you prefer?

("letter") Grades in Germany
1 = A
2 = B
3 = C
4 = D
5 = "E"..if we had it
6 = F
until the 11 grade...after that
15,14,13 = A
12,11,10 = B
9,8,7 = C
6,5,4 = D
3,2,1 = "E"
0 = F
In both set ups, an "E"is considered a failing grade.

Tracking after grade 4 resulting in the student being place in one of 3, maybe 4 tracks, depending on state:
Hauptschule, Realschule, Gymnasium (4th option for the "tweener" student is Gesamtschule).

Kindergarten = preschool
Grundschule, Volksschule = elementary school (1-4)
Hauptschule = "middle school" (5-8 or 9)
Realschule = higher level "middle/high school" (5-10)
Gymnasium = high school (5-13)

Fragen? Please feel free to ask!!!
Danke
